Your website is a lot more than a shop window on the digital high street. It is now your biggest sales and revenue channel. To do its job it has to show up in search results, and not just on Google any more. It also needs to be readable by AI search tools like ChatGPT, because that is increasingly where patients ask. Once a patient lands on the site, the journey to a booked appointment has to be quick, obvious, and friction-free, or they click off. This self-test gives you four practical checks you can run today to see how your site stacks up.
Test 01
Speed and build quality
Open the link below in a browser. Paste your website URL into the box at the top and click Analyse. Results return in around 20 seconds.
You will see scores for mobile first. 100% is best practice. Note the score or take a screenshot. Then click Desktop and do the same.
Open PageSpeed InsightsWhy this matters
PageSpeed Insights is a good first health check. It tells you whether your site is fast, mobile-friendly, and smooth for patients. Speed is only one part of a successful dental website though, so use this score as a baseline rather than the whole answer.
Test 02
Google SEO visibility
Open Google and search for the kind of phrase a real patient would use. Try a general one and one with your specialism. Take a screenshot of each result.
- Dentist near [your town]
- Dentist providing [your specialism] near [your town]
Why this matters
This is the simplest real-world test of your SEO visibility. When patients search for a dentist or a specific treatment in your area, your practice needs to be easy to find. If you are paying for SEO each month and not ranking on page one, the spend is not delivering. If you are ranking well on a small budget, you are doing something right.
Test 03
AI search readiness in ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT, currently the most-used AI search tool. Ask it the same kind of question a real patient would ask, but conversationally rather than keyword style. Take screenshots of the answers.
- Which dentist in [your town] can I book into for a scale and polish?
- Which dentist in [your town] is best for affordable teeth whitening?
Why this matters
This is your AI readiness test. AI search is not an extension of SEO blog posts and social media. It rewards websites that are properly structured so AI tools can read them confidently and recommend them in a short list. The website itself does the work, not the marketing around it.
Test 04
The patient journey on mobile
You will need a phone, a stopwatch, and a notepad for this one. If you know your own site too well, ask a friend or family member to do this test instead so the result is honest.
Pretend you are a new patient who wants a scale and polish. From the moment you find the website, work through it as if you were really booking. As you go, count two things: how many scrolls and clicks it takes you to find what you need, and how long the whole journey takes from first look to a confirmed appointment.
Patients booking everyday treatments are ready to act. They are not looking for a long explanation. They want to know four things, in this order:
- Do you offer the service?
- What does it cost?
- Where are you located?
- Can I book an appointment?
Why this matters
Lots of scrolling and clicks feel like obstacles. If the journey takes more than 30 seconds, the patient is at high risk of clicking off in frustration. A scale and polish might feel like a small booking, but it is often the first step on a high-value patient journey, so getting them booked is the prize.
